Volunteer Opportunities GRAND
AVENUE CLUB, INC. 210
E. Michigan Street Milwaukee,
WI 53202 tel.
414-276-6474 e-mail: rzforman@yahoo.com There are so many ways that the Milwaukee community can assist Grand Avenue Club. Please help us to provide opportunities to our fellow citizens who have experienced mental illness or to strengthen our community. Here are some possibilities: 1. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Do you know people who are quality employers? We would be very interested in speaking with them about Transitional Employment (TE), including Group Placements (GP), and Independent Employment (IE). Each employment opportunity is structured very differently. We would be grateful for the opportunity to speak to employers about how partnering with Grand Avenue Club can be mutually rewarding. (Call Rachel Forman, Pam Weisser, or Carol Meverden at 276-6474.) 2.
CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS Volunteers—clubhouse members, staff and a very committed group of board members, led by Scott Reithel, Vice-President at Metropolitan Associates, are responsible for the internal renovation of the building. If you are interested in jobs like painting or fixing, please let us know and we can either design a project for your group or for an individual! (Call Rachel Forman at 276-6474 or Scott Reithel at 390-1124.) 3. SKILLED ‘PRO-BONO” HELP We need assistance in the following “specialized” areas: photography, interior design, the acquisition of “real” art, framing, technical assistance especially in the area of computers (acquiring them as well as up-to-date software) and public relations. We would like to create a wall display that will document our ten year history. (Call Rachel Forman at 276-6474.) 4. ACQUISITION OF CLOTHING, HOUSEHOLD GOODS, AND FURNITURE GAC’s re-sale shop, “Ain’t It Grand!” will be happy to accept
used work-worthy clothing, household goods, and furniture.
We are especially appreciative of larger sizes and black skirts and
slacks and white shirts and blouses, for that is the “Zebra look” that is
required by Pick ‘n Save, one of our major employers.
Black or tan slacks and skirts are appreciated for Jewel/Osco, another
employer. Household goods are made
available to members who are acquiring their own apartments, some for the first
time. Everything is sold to members
for prices ranging from 5 cents to $5, so that we maintain the feeling of a shop
and members have the pleasure of shopping and paying for what they want.
(Call Bonnie Bruch at 276-6474.) We have a Writer’s Group, which was started by a volunteer and meets weekly. An artist comes down one Sunday a month for an Art Workshop. In mid-June we will be starting a GAC Chorus, which will meet one night a week. Do you have a special interest that you would like to share monthly—flower arranging? photography? drama? Our members are eager for you to share your special interests with us. (Call Pam Weisser or Rachel Forman at 276-6474.) 6.
TICKETS TO SPORTS EVENTS, CONCERTS, THEATRE, BALLET You have a subscription to the Milwaukee Rep, the Skylight Opera, Theatre X, or the MSO, and you have to be out-of-town the weekend of that performance or concert. Do you have tickets to the Milwaukee Brewers, Wave, Bucks or Admirals that you can’t use? Please call us and we will arrange to take them off your hands, or simply mail them to us. The vast majority of our members cannot afford to purchase tickets for cultural and sporting events and would be appreciative of your unused tickets. Call Pam Weisser or Rachel Forman at 276-6474.) 7. ONE ON ONE Might you be interested in tutoring someone who is studying for a GED, or taking courses at MATC for a professional certificate or degree? We would be grateful for one to two hours of your time for direct involvement (tutoring/mentoring) in our members’ educational plans. (Call Michele Tiesling at 276-6474.) 8. INVOLVEMENT IN OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS The GAC board of directors is currently recruiting board members for next year. We are particularly interested in people with financial management acumen and fund development interests. It is a three year term and the board year extends from September through August. Our current board is engaged and lively. Board meetings are the second Tuesday of the month from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the clubhouse. (Call Rachel Forman at 276-6474.) 9.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN/PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT GAC is currently waging a Capital Campaign for the purchase of the building and is always looking for program monies from foundations, corporations and generous individuals. We appreciate any assistance with these endeavors. The Capital Campaign will last for three years and we have secured in pledges nearly half of the $2.3 million that we need. 10. ADVOCACY If you would like, we could inform you when there is an issue—such as insurance parity for mental illness—about which you could articulate your concerns. Members of your congregation would have the option of writing, e-mailing, or faxing their legislators on issues that have great impact on the lives of those who have experienced mental illness, as well as their families and friends. 11. EXTRA
STUFF Did you throw a big party? Don’t know what to do with the flowers that might last all week? Or large amounts of extra food? We will take it all, and use it well. The flowers will be used to decorate our clubhouse and the food will be used to supplement the hundreds of meals we serve seven days a week! Thank you for taking the time to learn about Grand Avenue Club. We are committed to providing opportunities so that our fellow citizens and loved ones may take their rightful place in society. We would love to partner with you in this rewarding journey. |
