Perspectives on the Standards
Standard #6: Members have a right to immediate reentry into the clubhouse community after any length of absence unless their return poses a threat to the community.
We like to explain this Standard with a simple phrase: "Once a member, always a member". We do not charge dues for membership or require renewal of memberships. If one of us is hospitalized, takes on a job, returns to school, travels, has come to the end of a suspension from our clubhouse, or is absent for any other reason, we have the right to come back—no questions asked. However, since the clubhouse changes, we suggest that returning members spend a couple of days on orientation, so that they may become aware of increased opportunities, personnel changes, and new procedures.
If a member is suspended, they are welcome back once their suspension is over. However, if the person again demonstrates that they are a threat to the community, they are given another suspension. There may be people who should not be part of a Clubhouse community because the threat they pose is persistent and unchangeable. This is part of the balance that we strike between preserving our safety and giving every colleague the chance to change.
