Perspectives on the Standards

Standard #31: The clubhouse has an independent Board of Directors, or if it is affiliated with a sponsoring agency, has a separate advisory board comprised of individuals uniquely positioned to provide fiscal, legal, legislative, consumer and community support and advocacy for the clubhouse.

Some clubhouses are "freestanding," meaning that they are independent of any other organization. When this is the case, a clubhouse will have an independent board. Having an independent board means that the people on that board are completely committed to the clubhouse and not to any other organization. Because the clubhouse philosophy is often different from that of other service providers, conflicts may arise when a clubhouse is controlled by another agency. Including members on the Board is an expression of clubhouse values. It also sends an important message to members: members need to be included in the group that makes policy decisions and assume responsibility for the clubhouse.

Board members advocate for the clubhouse in many ways, and also carry the responsibility for making sure that it is implementing the Standards. Board members network with people in the community to develop housing, T.E.’s, and independent jobs for members. They also help to raise funds for the clubhouse. The work is voluntary; board members believe in the mission of the clubhouse.

When a clubhouse is under the auspices of another organization, it will not have an independent board. Under these circumstances, it is essential that there be a group of people whose exclusive commitment is to the clubhouse. It is the responsibility of the auspice agency to pay careful attention to this group, so that the needs of the clubhouse and its members are met.  Following is a current list of Grand Avenue Club's Board of Directors and their organization affiliations:
