Perspectives on the Standards
Standard #30: The clubhouse provides an effective reach out system to members who are not attending, becoming isolated in the community, or hospitalized.
This Standard demonstrates that our clubhouses are not merely workplaces, where employees are often treated as if they are interchangeable and anonymous. We value each other beyond the work we do at the clubhouse. Because of this, we reach out to members who are in need in various ways. By visiting people who are in the hospital, sending them cards, and telephoning colleagues who are out of touch with the clubhouse, we build a sense of community through caring for each other. This work is central to our mission as a clubhouse, and lets members know that they are missed and needed right here--no matter what.
Clubhouses need to reach members who are struggling because we have so much to offer them, to help them get back on track. But no clubhouse forces members to attend, or even to accept assistance. All we can do is show our concern and invite members back—and the clubhouse movement does that persistently. There is no shame or stigma associated with having a rough time.
