Perspectives on the Standards

Standard #28: The clubhouse director, members, staff and other appropriate persons participate in a three-week training program in the Clubhouse Model at a certified training base. Consultations by the Faculty for Clubhouse Development are provided to all programs seeking to implement the Clubhouse Model.

When many colleagues are familiar with the philosophy of in the clubhouse model, the effectiveness of the clubhouse increases. Trained colleagues educate others in their own clubhouses. Training makes colleagues more effective in all their clubhouse roles and gives them an insight into the unique relationship between members and staff, which is at the heart of clubhouse life. Being a part of a clubhouse community becomes even more exciting when we realize that we are part of an international movement that changes people’s lives.

Beginning clubhouses need guidance to establish themselves. Clubhouse founders find it very helpful to receive information and advice from people who are fluent in the art of clubhouse. New clubhouses can rely on other clubhouses’ experiences, both their successes and failures. Participating in the network of ICCD clubhouses gives real meaning to the original message of the founders of the first clubhouse: "We are not alone."
