Perspectives on the Standards

Standard #23: The clubhouse is located in an area where access to local transportation can be assured, both in terms of getting to and from the program and accessing T.E. opportunities. The clubhouse provides or arranges for effective alternatives whenever access to public transportation is limited.

Since few of us can drive to our clubhouses, it is important that clubhouses be accessible through local mass transit or through private vans. Having a centrally located clubhouse makes it available to more of us, and allows employed members to get to the clubhouse before or after our jobs.

A lack of transportation is known to be disabling in itself. If we do not have a car or a license we face daily frustrations and inconveniences. Clubhouses strive to get members over transportation hurdles with the least amount of stigma attached. Many clubhouses will help us to access public transit through information about reduced fares, and even through direct colleague-to-colleague assistance.

Some clubhouses are located in busy downtown areas. So members who do drive may not choose to because of traffic problems or parking costs. These members may use public transit or even vans. Not all of us are without cars, no matter how we may choose to come to our clubhouses. Other clubhouses are located in areas where there is no, or minimal, public transportation. Even though arranging transportation is very time-consuming, it is essential. Some clubhouses in rural areas have done a wonderful job of creating transportation so that members can get to the clubhouse regularly.
