Perspectives on the Standards

The clubhouse is not an employment agency, but it is here to support and help all of us who wish to be employed to find good jobs, or careers. Even if we completed several T.E.’s and feel ready for an Independent Employment, the job search is difficult. Searching for a job is difficult for everybody! The clubhouse model is flexible, because the staff members are generalists. Staff members are able to work with us at whatever level we are at vocationally. The clubhouse helps us obtain appropriate attire, transportation, job applications, education, encouragement—all of the elements that add up to success. Staff will assist us to write resumes and cover letters and will use clubhouse contacts to secure a job. We can get as much or as little help as we choose.

The clubhouse offers supports to members even after we secure that first independent employment. Members are free to seek out this support or to disregard it, but it is available. Clubhouse staff have the ability to work closely with employers, and to be a mediator if any questions or disputes arise. Clubhouses are committed to helping independently employed members to better their employment. It demonstrates that we value long-term, ongoing relationships among colleagues. We do not end these relationships once we are established in independent employment. Such a cut-off, in the context of clubhouse life, would not be merely a discontinuation of services; it would be a betrayal of trust.

Holding an independent job is difficult, especially at first. It is reassuring to know that there is someone you know—and who knows you well—who is available to help you apply for and interview for jobs, keep the job, and better your employment. Many of us have had some trouble with aspects of independent employment, but becuase the community is here to assist us to work through job related problems, we have the resources to continue working.
